115. The Sick Bros

Tuesday, 2/26/13

Sick, but with ELECTRICITY!!

Chad and I woke up as the sick brothers. We were both drained of energy and our living room was the bathroom. Last night, perfectly healthy Chad warned the director that I may not be able to teach. However, he now had the bug too. However, there was no one to sub for me so I went to school looking slightly scary. Somehow, the students and I had a great day with our Math, Religion, Language, and Art classes.

That afternoon, Chad and I did not move from our beds. I had not eaten anything yesterday or todayI was hungry, but knew that eating would make my tummy angry. The solution to my problem came through our angel, Tabitha. Her and Jacque had returned for a few more days after their trip to Guayaramerin. Knowing we were bed bound, she made us Potassium Soup with carrots, potatoes, onions, and deliciousness. After slurping down this magical concoction, the twinkle returned to our eyes. Shes not my mom, but the next best thing I could have asked for!

Good news!! Familia Feliz has full time electricity!! Woohoo. Finally. The lights were on today when I returned from school without the generator buzzing in the backgroundwhich meant the electricity was hooked up. We just need to install switches and more powerful amperage so we can work refrigerators and power tools. Behold the new Familia Feliz!

114. Official Teacher Status

Monday, 2/25/13

I am officially a teacher. I was given something that designated me as a legitimate teacher. It was not a certificate, a diploma, or an experience. It was a simple apple on my desk. How cliché. How great. How tasty! This teaching thing has its perks after all.

I was in the classroom at 7:00 preparing the day for the students when Consuelo Anahi walked in and handed me a juicy looking, green Granny Smith apple. I kept bragging to everyone that day that I was given an apple by my student. Yup, they were clearly jealous.

I spent the rest of the day ordering school books and resting. I was filling low in the gas tank and did not want another episode of my ol friend Salmonella. So, I washed all my clothes and took a good long sleep.

News: Desks Orders Made

News Update!

The desks are on their way! The order has been made. We are receiving the first 15 desks March 12. Granted, with Bolivian time that might be a few days later than planned. And of course, my 15 students will be the first recipients for the desks. They are quite excited. Thanks again for all the donations!

113. Top 10...Round 2!

Sunday 2/17/13-Sunday 2/24/13

I hope you liked the last list, because here is round two of the top ten interesting things for this week. Enjoy!

10. Staff Meetings (Thursday and Sunday)

I know, I know. How can staff meetings be in anyones top ten list of interesting things. But, Familia Feliz rarely has meetings and never two in one week! One meeting for everyone, and one only for the teachers. We got a lot done and no one broke into a fight. Always a good thing.

9. Dodged Balloons (Sunday)

Balloon incoming
Carnival was over last Wednesdaythe kids with the water balloons were not done. They pelted us. I got smashed on the head and some of the others were pelted with blue and purple paint. The locals must of thought, These foreigners must really be dumb to all be driving slowly through town in a truck without a roof. Do they have brains?

8. Guitar with Brayan (Wednesday)

I look forward to the ½ hour of recess these days. It gives me time to run a few errands. This day, I walked into my house eager to eat my grapefruit and then prepare for more classes when I saw an eager Brayan. He was playing guitar and wanted me to help him learn some songs. I helped him out and we learned Sanctuary and Lord I Lift Your Name On High. I cherish these moments together, because I know my little man is heading off to Guayaramerin soon.

7. New Soccer ball   (Sunday)

Its has been a sad week at Familia Feliz. We have not had a soccer ball all week! That is almost a crime in Bolivia. All the volunteers chipped in a few bucks and we bought the kids a nice, yellow ball. The kids are ecstatic. Us too. Lets just hope it lasts more than the expected lifespan of two weeks!

6. Jose and Juan Carlos Returned (Sunday)

Two of my nephews from last year have returned! Ever energetic Juan Carlos and his success-bound older brother Jose Carlos are back ready to give smiles and hugs. I missed them.

5. Desk Shopping Trip (Thursday)

Juan, Mari-Luz, and I went into town in the afternoon. We ran chores  to buy plates, spoons, and flour for everyone. Even more exciting, though, I made an order for the new desks! We should be getting the first 15 in 3 weeks. The carpenter shop was so cool and the best-renowned carpenter in town did seem quite good. The cost was way more than I was told so we can only buy 48 of the 60 desks. However, the desks are much needed and will greatly improve the learning environment. We have run out of all our desks and most of them are missing parts! To celebrate, I bought us delicious fruit juice from Tutti Fruttis.

4. Janette Walked (Wednesday)

I walked through the big house and noticed Janette standing on her hands and feet. First time event! I helped her up and she walked with little help. She was laughing with pride. She has almost returned to full strength and is making rapid progress. Keep praying for her and for great parents to adopt her!

The proud smile of a champion!
Step by step! Go girl!

3. Harvesting Rice (2nd Sunday)

We spent 7 hours today harvesting rice. Every single kid was out with us cutting off the rice clusters and putting them in bags. They were proswe were not! We have more to go and should have about for large bags of rice when complete. Next up? Corn.

Mike doing work like a true Austrian

2. Brayan Left (Wednesday)

Surprise! Brayan left earlier than expected. Melissa and I chatted with him about his future. He wanted to live back in Rurre and unwisely decided to do so. We allowed him to since we want him to make his own choices and we cannot legally prevent him from doing so. Therefore, Juan and I brought him into town. We had a cold corn drink, got a tour of his house, and said our goodbyes. He even had a tear or two. I will miss him and hope he will choose to go to Guayaramerin and become a real man. Good luck lil buddy!

1. Teaching
Teaching is a blast. Here are some interesting highlights of this week.
-When the kids act up, I make them stand in the corners. I have named the four corners the United States, Germany, Canada, and Ecuador. When his or her time is up, I often ask, How was the weather in Canada today? They appreciate the humor.
-I know more Spanish than my students. Nawnot really. But I can conjugate past and future tense a little better than they can. They speak bad Spanish and very few actually know how to use verbs. It is my job to help with that! Quite the task. I felt pretty smart, though.
-One boy was picking on a girl. She complained to me about it in front of everyone, but I did not see it. So I asked Jorge what he had seen. He thought for a second, folded his hands under his chin, batted his eyelashes and in a high-pitched voice said, I have seen very terrible things! We (me too) could not stop laughing for a good minute. What a goober!
-I have an older student in my class who is clearly past puberty. To the amusement of the class, I call him Mi Hombre (My Man). However, he is terrified of attention. With a mischievous expression he hides behind my whiteboard and hides his face when called upon. I cannot get over how shy he is. I wonder if he will ever open up in front of everyone.

112. Top 10

Monday, 2/11/13-Sabbath, 2/16/13

I have been busy. And yes, slightly on the lazy side. My blogs have not seen my typing fingers for a good week. So, I want to give you a good top ten list of the most exciting things that happened this week. Let go:

10. Juans Tooth (Tuesday)

I woke up and left my room. I saw Juan and expected the usual Buen dia hermano! However, I only received a sad glance from his usually sparkly eyes. I asked with concern what was wrong. He did the opposite I expected when he smiled. There was a hole. In his mouth. His golden tooth fell out. Poor ol Juan. He takes such good care of everything and loves to look good. Maybe Chad and I will start a Fill in the Gap Fund.

9. Fruit (Monday)

Paradise!
I wanted fruit all week! On Monday, I finally bought someokayI bought a whole bunch! Peaches, mangos, apples, copuacu, and some random coconut thing. They were scrumptious and filled a gaping whole in my heart.

8. Brayan

Brayan is a great guy, but hates to work hard. He would only work semi-well if put under my supervision. Therefore, during the five work projects this week, he and I hung out for the entire 2 hours. We raked dead grass, cleaned the church, and pulled weeds. We joked a lot and he helped me watch the other boys I was in charge of. It was nice to see him happy and feeling useful to someone.

7. Carnival (Sunday-Wednesday)

Blue balloon to the
heart!
Red balloon
Carnival is the grandest holiday in South America. Unfortunately, it usually constitutes of fiestas containing unwholesome activities. Rurrenabaques holiday is less crazy, but still quite weird. Most of the kids just throw water balloons at you nonstop. Many of them have dye inside too. We experienced this when we went in for a kids day out with the younger volunteers.

6. Staff Meeting (Tuesday)

Finally, we now know what our careers will be for the rest of our time in Bolivia. I will be teaching all subjects for 5th and 6th grade. Yes, that includes Spanish. I look forward to expanding my vocabulary. Chad was given the title of Agriculture and Grounds Director. He will be mowing and beautifying Familia Feliz for the last 3 months of our visit.

5. Bye Oldies, Hello Rookies (Saturday)

We made a trade. Jacque, Tabitha, Amos, and Greg left in exchange for 7 new volunteers. Nequisha, Juanita, Jody, Alana, Lars, Mike, and Elijah. Nequisha, Juanita, and Jody will actually be with us for one whole year! Just in time since Ali left and the girls upstairs needed someone to care for them. We will miss the four who are leaving, but look forward to meeting some new faces.
The oldies drinking tamarindo juice
We will miss those Asians!
The new crop of volunteers
Maribel seems to like new Juanita quite a bit!

4. Tabitha and Jacque

Preacher Jacque when he is not using
the weed whacker. Rare!
Tabitha and Jacque are my soul mates. They are two of the temporary volunteers this week. They never stop working, but more than that, I cannot stay away from them. They are addicting. Jacque and I will eat pots of food together and Tabitha and I will jam with our angelic voices. J I wish they would stay forever.

Awww. Everyday is Valentine´s Day for these two!

3. Ali left (Thursday)

See number 2!

2. V-tines day dinner (Thursday)

Our shining star left today. Ali left for home today--but not before we made the most of it! Being Valentines Day, my parents sponsored Chad, Ali, Amos, and myself to an exquisite dinner at the nicest restaurant in Rurre. Since it was on my parents, we went all out!! We had so many appetizers and pasta dishes, we felt drunk on food after our stomachs were 10 times the normal size. Then we said goodbyes and Ali made us say that we would go to Australia for her big birthday in a year in a half. Well seethat would be quite another great adventure. Good luck with everything Ali!!

Well, at least I got this sophisticated fella

1. Teaching (Wednesday-Friday)

Teaching these first three days has beenchallengingyet rewarding. I had 8 of my eventual 14 students. Our moto is the Class of Champions. That seemed to boost their morale the first day. We had fun and by the end of the first day they were saying that I am a great teacher. Then the next day was a wakeup callI instituted a bit of discipline. When they would disrupt each other from learning, I would send them to one of four countries (a.k.a.-1 of 4 corners of the room): United States, Canada, Ecuador, or Germany. They liked the creativity but they soon did not like the ideaand neither did I. I felt like I was being too strict. Then, I kind of did away with the corners and lost respect with my students. I struggled through the day. As I thought about it that night, I decided I had to stick with the rules I made no matter how strange to establish consistency and some respect. Therefore, the next day I stuck with it, the students abided by the rules, and we were able to learn with less distractions. Mission accomplishedno more like: Mission in progress towards accomplishment.
By the end of the week the kids were begging for homework. So I gave it to them. Also, we had some fun. For some reason, the kids were obsessed with the phrase Monkey Soup that day. Somehow, those words appeared on the white board. My new rule was that we could not touch or erase that word and it was the most important thing in the room. I circled it, gave it sun rays, squared it, and underlined it to signify its importance. The kids got a kick out of that one.

111. Cleaning Everywhere

Sunday, 2/10/13

We cleaned all day. We flooded the upstairs with water to scrub the floors. We moved all the babies downstairs so the floods would not take them away. We scrubbed the walls with bleach and sponges. Chad and I emptied out the storage closet. We found dental supplies, anethetics, baseball gloves, bags of clothes, printers, felt, fishing polls, and a whole lot of keys. I found the keys and started to label them. Therefore, Warren, the bossman, so theatrically labeled me the Key Executive! What an honor! J

Told you we cleaned everywhere...even up in the air
